Three Tips For Keeping Your Valuables Safe On A Catford Move

Posted on 29/08/2014

When moving house, you’re putting your valuables at risk. Not on purpose, you understand, but when moving a lot of items, the smaller, more fragile pieces are the ones that are most likely to be lost or broken. Even when moving to a place like Catford, a place known for its safe and predictable way of life, accidents can happen, and not even the insurance payout can replace sentimentality. So, to keep the risk at a minimum here are three precautions you can take;

Make an inventory

Planning is a pivotal part of moving in general, but when it comes to your valuables, the most important part is making that inventory. Make a list of your valuables, and check them off either when you’ve packed them, or when the box that contains them is loaded into the van. Or both, if you want to be doubly careful.

Don’t just limit your inventory to what items you’re taking. Make a note of what boxes they’ve been stored in, so you can unpack them with extra care when you reach your new place. If you haven’t been labelling your boxes, heartily consider it, it’ll help with efficiency as well as safety.

Pack and secure everything properly

When packing the breakables, liberal amounts of bubble wrap is a must. Find a balance between being frugal and going crazy with them, though. If you have a lot of valuables, you don’t want to use it all on one box. Consider using packing paper, too, to plug up the empty space in storage, so when you’re on the move your goods do not roll around and collide with each other.

Use common sense when packing, too, do not throw valuables into boxes with heavy objects; that’s just tempting fate. Packing similar goods in similar boxes is generally a good idea, but don’t put too many into one box. If you’re familiar with the term ‘putting all of your eggs in one basket’, you’ll understand why. Especially when you consider what the ‘eggs’ are in this scenario.

Make sure when you’ve loaded the boxes that they are all tied down tightly before you set off. Make sure none of the elastic is fraying or loose while you’re there. This check will probably take you less than a couple of minutes, but may end up being the saviour of your breakables.

Keep your most treasured items near

Besides your family, I mean. Yes, if there’s a bracelet or memento that you couldn’t bear breaking, as long as it isn’t -too- breakable you might as well keep it by your side. Wrap it in bubble-wrap and put it in your pocket. This may seem like an over-reaction, but if it puts your mind at ease, it’s one less thing to worry about in the car.

Take these tips to heart, and the chaos of moving won’t spread to your valuable necklaces or fine china, and they will be in the same, pristine condition that they were in once you left your old home. And, lets be honest, if you’re moving to the town of cats, there’s very little danger of anything being broken once you get there.
