Moving To SW11 – How To Unpack The Kitchen

Posted on 29/08/2014

Moving to the London area with postcode SW11 (Battersea and Clapham Junction) will require proper organization, a solid budget and a strict schedule. One of the biggest tasks of every house moving process is the packing process. It’s tiresome, time-consuming and you need plenty of packing material and techniques. Since one of the most essential rooms (which is usually unpacked first at the new house) is the kitchen, it’s important to have a good plan for the after-move time. Let’s take a look at the multiple stages of unpacking a kitchen after a move to SW11 and turning it into a great area.

• Assessing the space: Start this process by clearing out the kitchen if it isn’t empty already. If you’ve had a floor plan in advance, you probably have an idea of how you want the kitchen to look. Don’t move all the boxes and furniture pieces in the kitchen just yet. Take a few minutes to consider the measures and the look and feel of the room. The way you see the kitchen when you view the house (considering to purchase or rent it) can be much different from the way you see it after you move. Think about the space and ensure that the kitchen is above all functional. Of course there is nothing bad with creating an aesthetically pleasing room, but pay attention to the high traffic areas, the major appliances and their use and the focal points. The kitchen has to be in sync with the rest of the house, not look like a completely separate area.

• Changing the room: If the kitchen doesn’t have this natural focal point that you want, you can easily create it by placing a large mirror, a plant, a painting or long drapes at the right spot. The kitchen can look much better with some additional elements – adding a cozy and welcoming feeling to the area.

• Unpacking: When you start unpacking the kitchen it’s essential to first place the major appliances and ensure that the furniture pieces are on their right places. Only after that should you start unpacking the cutlery, the small appliances, the china and glassware and the pots and pans.

• Arranging: Unpacking a kitchen is a more complex process than you think. There is creativity in it, unlike in the packing process which is strictly mechanical and often even rushed. Arrange the kitchen items in a way that makes using them easier and quicker. Don’t try to create a complete replica of your old kitchen and use the space to its full advantage. One of the ways to turn the kitchen into a cozier and prettier area is by placing some plants on the window sill or on the shelves. Choose plants which can easily flourish even in a darker area.

• Balancing: Creating a balanced room that you will like spending time in should be your ultimate goal when unpacking the kitchen. The heavy and large furniture pieces can be balanced with groups of smaller objects. Use lighting and space creatively and wisely and always ensure that there is enough room for moving around while cooking. Mix materials in the kitchen to bring some life to it – metal, wood, marble, glass and more. Leave sufficient room for the doors and drawers to be opened.

These tips are invaluable when you start unpacking the kitchen at your new SW11 home.
