Moving Into The W9 Area And Into A Bigger Home

Posted on 29/08/2014

If you are able to afford to move to a bigger property in the W9 area, you should consider yourself very lucky, this is not the luxury many people have, especially in the current economic climate. Before you rush into buying your bigger property you should consider the change and effects that this will have on both you and your finances, read through these before rushing into buying a bigger home.

I know a larger house will cost me more each month in terms of mortgage/rent, but how else could it affect my finances?

• In terms of heating, the house will take longer to heat throughout and it will be more difficult to keep your home consistently warm, especially with the property having more entrance and exit points. This will likely mean that you will need to have your heating on higher and/or more frequently, which will increase the amount that you end up spending on your heating bills, especially during the cold winter months. Check to make sure that the house is properly insulated, which will help to keep the heat in, if it isn’t contact your local council authority to arrange having your free wall cavity insulation installed.

• With a larger home come more lights, more power sockets, more electrical devices to fill up the various rooms, more bathrooms and all of this can have a massive impact on your electrical and water bills. You can try to remember to turn lights off as you leave the room, buy energy efficient appliances and bulbs, along with implanting any other power saving ideas you may have, but ultimately it is likely that your utility bills are going to increase.

• There is one thing that you can do to help you to get a better idea what the impact a larger home may have on your bills is, ask to see some previous utility bills from the previous home owners.

Other than my finances, what else should I be thinking about?

• Once you have moved in you will want to put curtains up as soon as possible, not only to give yourselves a bit of privacy from your neighbours, but also to protect your belongings from prying eyes of passers-by. You should make sure you have enough curtains to hang in all of your windows, a bigger home will mean more windows.

• When you move into a bigger house you will have more room for your stuff, however, if you have moved from a smaller home, you may not have that much stuff and as a result your home may feel empty which might mean that you need to buy some more things to fill it. The last thing you should do right now, however, is to go impulse buying and start buying pieces of furniture etc. with little thought behind it. Most of the people who impulse buy end up either having to re-buy furniture to replace the stuff they’ve bought because they don’t like it or it doesn’t work in the space, or they end up having to decorate the house in a way they may not have wanted in order to make it work with the furniture. Be patient, you don’t need a house full of furniture etc. in order to settle in properly.

• Some people, when moving home, get rid of their old furniture completely and buy new furniture to replace it, when moving into a bigger home this isn’t a good idea, especially as you may need to buy extra furniture just to fill the house. Your old furniture could be utilised for some other purpose in your new home.
