Clearing your Chelsea Home before the Removal Company Arrives

Posted on 29/08/2014

Everything about moving is daunting. The time, the amount, the distance. no matter how much time you have, or how far you’re going, everything can be made easier by reducing the amount you need to pack up and move when the time comes. It reduces the time spent packing, and it will reduce the amount spent of removals services, so having a clear out is well worth the effort. For Londoners there are plenty of ways of clearing your house before the removal company arrive in Chelsea and the rest of the city.

The most important piece of advice that can be given to those about to de-clutter their lives, is give your self time. Some recommend leaving half a day for each room, and that’s just for sorting through the things you need and don’t need. Once you have found some free time, a system needs to be put in place to discern between useful items that you want to keep, those items that you may need at some point, and those which you will never need ever again!

Make piles under the names of ‘Keep’, ‘Chuck’ and ‘Sell’, and be ruthless with yourself and others. Items often have huge sentimental value which only appears when you’re just about to throw them, and disappears shortly after, so be thorough. Those items that go straight into the ‘Chuck’ pile can go immediately to charities, if they are in good shape, or in the bin if they aren’t. The sell pile will likely be full of things that you don’t absolutely need, but like, or would be willing to keep if you weren’t moving. These items are worth getting some return on if they are worth anything, and you’d be surprised by the amount you can make by selling high numbers of items for low prices. Go back through your ‘Keep’ pile, and make really, really sure that it’s all stuff the you either use every day, or is too emotionally valuable to let go of.

The best way to sell your items depends on what you have. If you you need to get the full worth from a valuable piece, then try an auctioneer, but be aware of the costs that it may incur. The best way to shift large amounts of household goods at a low price fairly quickly is to sell them at a car boot sale, where keen eyed shoppers are often looking for bargains. For all in between there are online auctions, like eBay, or classifieds like Gumtree, where bargain hunters and collectors alike will search for for your items and bid up the price. There is a fair amount of time involved in photographing and listing these items however, so make sure that the time and the potential fees are worth the item’s potential value.

getting rid of your completely unwanted items can be harder than you think. It’s often not just a case of chucking things in the bin. If you have very high volumes of things that need to be removed, then hiring a skip may be worth the expense, but remember that you will need a permit to have it sat outside your house if you live on a street without a drive. potentially cheaper is to arrange for the council to do a large waste disposal collection. You’ll need to get all of the items out of, but it may take a couple of weeks for the collection to get organized. There are companies who will do a similar service, for around the same cost of a skip, and as they recycle or donate, you know that your items won’t go to landfill sites, and may help the needy.
